DUNLEAVY ‘THE GRAFTER’ SYRAH 2012

On a vineyard at the isolated Eastern end of the island, a man laboured tirelessly to build his dream – green grafting many of the vines that comprise this extraordinary Syrah. Today, his legacy lives on in The Grafter.

Tasting Notes:

A nose of fresh blackberries mingles with white pepper and sweet Christmas cake spice. Medium body, ripe tannins and a long finish, this wine is drinking well now and over the next 3-4 years.

Vintage Notes

A warm and dry spring got things off to a great start in 2012 resulting in good fruit set and crop levels. At times the growing season was up and down with rainfall and dry spells coming and going through December to March. Fortunately April was settled and warm and it allowed the grapes to fully ripen with full of flavour and concentration. For those who did not crop thin however, it was a challenging and lighter vintage. At Te Motu we cut back crop early and late. As a result the fruit we picked late in April was in magnificent condition. A vintage that not only shows well in youth, but will age well for at least 10 years.
