Named for the head of Te Motu’s founding family, Terry Dunleavy, Kokoro means ‘the patriarch’ in Maori and ‘the heart of things’ in Japanese.
A Merlot dominant blend with Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah, hand-harvested from low-yielding vines, Kokoro is made in a more forward style to accentuate fruit ripeness and texture, this wine can be enjoyed in its youth but has the pedigree to improve for years to come.

‘A beautifully crafted red with blackcurrant, chocolate and violet aromas and flavors with very fine tannins and just a hint of sandalwood to the fruit at the finish. Medium-bodied with well-integrated tannins. A blend of merlot, cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc. Drink after 2026, but already gorgeous’.
96 Points – James Suckling

A year like no other
2020 was a dream vintage, picked in the shadow of global turmoil.
As we picked throughout lockdown, we were grateful to find pristine, clean, ripe, concentrated fruit across the board.
Minimal sorting was needed – in fact, in most blocks the fruit was perfect enough to ‘pick-and-drop’.
The pandemic provided challenges but we were able to complete the harvest with just the core vineyard crew due to perfect conditions.
We had no rain pressure through vintage. We were able to pick when we wanted. Allowing each of our red wine varieties to ripen to optimal levels.
All fruit was pristine but some exposed blocks were down in volume due to high winds impacting flowering in spring.
