At Te Motu we use only the highest quality fruit, harvested at optimum ripeness, to afford a lower intervention, crafted approach. Our belief is: the more a wine is handled before bottling, the more is taken from the finished wine. Therefore, most years, crops are green harvested to achieve physiological ripeness at relatively moderate alcohol levels. The Te Motu flagship wine is a Cabernet Sauvignon dominant blend with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec. The blend used varies from year to year, and on average only 4500 bottles are produced in each vintage. By combining the highest level of quality and care, with the limited nature of the vintages, makes each sip of Te Motu wine even more special than the last. Purchase your bottle of luxury today.

Sun-Soaked Bordeaux Grapes

Bordeaux varietals are the soul of our winemaking philosophy. Our Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec thrive in mineral-rich soils and a maritime climate that mirrors Bordeaux itself. The result? Grapes of exceptional structure, depth, and balance — perfectly suited for age-worthy reds with elegance and power. Grown with intention and harvested by hand, our Bordeaux blends embody the essence of Te Motu: bold yet refined, expressive yet timeless.

A Slice Of History

How’s this for a wager — all the sheep in New Zealand for all the gold in South Africa?

Thankfully, when it came time to settle their 1995 Rugby World Cup bet, Nelson Mandela and Prime Minister Jim Bolger chose a case of wine instead.

Terry Dunleavy, a man who knew a thing or two about a good drop, was called on to help assemble a fitting selection of New Zealand’s finest — including the inaugural 1993 vintage of the Te Motu Cabernet/Merlot blend. One for the history books.

Where Vines Thrive

Nurtured by nature at its most generous. Sheltered by surrounding hills and refreshed by coastal breezes, Onetangi Valley’s unique microclimate offers long, dry summers and cool evenings — perfect for slow, even ripening. Deep, mineral-rich soils and thoughtful vineyard care allow our vines to dig deep, flourish, and express the full character of the land.
