A limited release of ultra-premium Syrah, from a strong Waiheke Island vintage.

Named in dedication to Margaret Dunleavy, the green-fingered mother of eleven, Kuikui means ‘the matriarch’ in Maori. As her children planted vines in the Onetangi Valley, she placed and nurtured the rose bushes at the end of each row.

Kuikui represents the best expression of Syrah our estate will produce.

Hand-harvested from low-yielding vines, with an obsessive level of fruit sorting.  This Syrah was fermented in barrel, before enjoying extended élevage and maturing for 24 months in premium French oak before resting in bottle.

From the acclaimed 2015 vintage, just 12 magnums (1.5L) of our Kuikui Syrah were bottled. Only 8 are being made available for sale.

This marks our first large format release in 25 years — the last being the 2000 Te Motu. These magnums are not just rare in size but in spirit: a deeply personal Syrah, aged nearly a decade, and built to reward those who wait.

This wine can be enjoyed in its youth, but has the pedigree to improve for years to come. Only 600 standard bottles produced, and only 12 Magnums.

VINTAGE NOTES

2015 was a great vintage here in the valley, though cool conditions through spring flowering did thin our volumes, the remaining fruit that developed through the long hot summer was beautifully concentrated.

CRITIC REVIEWS

Supremely elegant wine with cedar, dark berry, tobacco leaf, black pepper, old leather, ‘forest floor’ and dried herb flavours. Showing the benefit of bottle age but with plenty of potential to become even more interesting with further careful cellaring.
