The flagship wine of the estate, Te Motu is a Cabernet Sauvignon dominant blend with Merlot and Cabernet Franc, hand-harvested from low-yielding vines in the Onetangi Valley.

Produced in an era before Waiheke Island had fully emerged on the international fine wine map, the 1998 vintage has become one of the quietly celebrated wines in Te Motu’s cellar history. More than twenty years on from harvest, it was recognised in Jean-Baptiste Ancelot’s Wine Explorers project with its highest classification: vin d’anthologie — “wine for the ages.”

A mature and beautifully resolved expression of Te Motu, now showing the layered complexity that comes only with time in bottle.

Tasting Notes

Supple and elegant, with sweet dark fruits and a seductively smooth texture. The wine has evolved into a deeply savoury expression, showing notes of liquorice, prune, dried apricot and toffee alongside forest floor, game and earthy tertiary character.

A graceful mature wine with remarkable length and persistence

VINTAGE NOTES

Huge fruiting cane vigour carried through from previous season combined with favourable conditions at flowering and fruit-set for an abundant crop. A significant rainfall just prior to veraison renewed vigour. Extremely favourable conditions from veraison to harvest produced remarkably clean fruit with flavours and sugars achieving optimum ripeness in harmony.
